Plus, by the time Magikarp can even use Struggle, Metapod’s defense is off the charts anyway.
@Kirby080, let us specify that it’s a wild Metapod (who thus has not retained its Tackle from being a Caterpie), and they are below level 15 (which I believe is the level at which Magikarp learns its own Tackle).
It will end. And Metapod will loose. At any point they will run out of PP and use struggle, but since metapod will use stringshot, he will attack first every turn, so in the end he will ran out of HP first. Mwhahahah. Okay, so now you can comment why my theory not right:
metapod also has harden. stringshot 35pp, harden 40pp. magikarp has splash with 40pp. therefore, 75pp metapod>40pp magikarp. Furthermore, if metapod has stringshot, one can safely assume it evolved from caterpie, which also had tackle, not only adding 35pp but providing a damaging move. then again, magikarp has flail and tackle which is an added 75pp, so the total is 110pp metapod vs 120pp magikarp. so as it turns out, you were right but for the wrong reason. 7/10
bounce, I forgot bounce. extra 5pp, damaging move AND super effective. but this is assuming they’ve reached a level where they have learnt all their available level up moves. also, we haven’t taken into consideration what level the metapod evolved from caterpie, if it evolved at all. adding this factor, it could also have bug bite, extra 20pp and 65 base power.
so, if we take what i would assume to be the average in-game wild metapod (lv7 not an evolved caterpie), and the average in-game magikarp (lv10), then they’ll have splash and harden respecitvely. in this case, magikarp will win as it has an extra 10pp (40>30, sorry i should have checked earlier.) we also haven’t taken the effects of harden into consideration for when magikarp attacks through struggle (when it eventually does) and also the base HP and attack of each pokémon, but i feel i’ve spent enough time on this. are you happy with the analysis of your comment and the fight in general?
Isn’t the point of this argument that the pokemon with more PP will lose as the other will be able to struggle before it and have a head start on inflicting dammage?
As this most probably applies to Fire Red/Leaf Green (argue about this as much as you want, but it’s most probably true), the levels are most probably lv 5 for Magikarp (Old Rod) and 4 or maybe 5 for Metapod (found in Viridian Forest). The rest of your argument is sane; however I just could not stand you having the lvs wrong.
Bounce isn’t a level up move. There is a chance that a magikarp from the dream world will have it or you can use a move tutor from Platinum, Heart Gold, or Soul Silver. So, for this argument, bounce is ignored. The argument is about a metapod with only harden and a magikarp with only splash.
Since when did anyone decide what the argument was about?
I don’t see anywhere in the post, a statement saying that both Pokemon only know one move.
Everything in the comments, therefore, including your statement, is conjecture.
Especially since the argument started in this comment chain with someone saying the Metapod would know string shot. Therefore, your argument is now invalid.
If we say that both Pokemon only know one non-damaging move each, then obviously Metapod would win. (That is assuming that both Pokemon have full PP.)
I would.
Metapod will only know stringshot if it evolved from a caterpie. If it was caught in the wild, it would only know harden which would mean Magikarp would run out of PP first since it is significantly faster. However, if the metapod DID evolve from a Caterpie as opposed from being caught in the wild, it would also know tackle and have no need for struggle.
Assuming similar levels and that, as the post would suggest, each only has splash or harden, respectively, Metapod would most likely win because it’s defense would be far greater than Magikarp’s.
If more than one move is present, then when Magikarp runs out of PP, there is also the chance that flailing about will result in a self-inflicted wound, much like being confused, again putting Magikarp at a disadvantage.
Actually, if you are assuming metapod had stringshot, then he will have tacke too (unless it was move deleted for some odd reason) and would win because it would have the pp from all three moves, PLUS tackles damage. Unless you give magikarp flail and tackle, in which case it will still lose because of Metapod’s massive defense.
Maybe I got my wording wrong. It’s been a while since i used a pokemon to the point where it ran out of PP for all moves. I thought that at this point it started “flailing about” but it might have been “struggling” or something like that.
Someone EV train a lvl 1 Magikarp and a Metapod from a lvl 1 Caterpie all the way to 100 and we’ll see. Pretty much the only strategy is to have Magikarp use Bounce and Tackle, and then Flail when it does more dmg than Tackle; and Metapod to Harden 6x and then Bug Bite and Tackle
It’d have more attack and more hp if they had the same EVs and IVs, and more PP, so it would win even without the defense boosts, as metapod and magikarp have the same defense anyway.
It depends on the generation. In Gen I-III, with equal levels, then Metapod will likely win (barring a critical hit). This relies heavily on the fact that Harden has less PP than Splash. This means that Metapod will start using Struggle first, and thus wear away Magikarp.
However, in Gen IV-V, Struggle now costs the user 1/4 of their Max HP. Then unless Metapod can win in three turns, Magikarp will win.
If it is a true metapod magikarp battle where neither of them have an attacking move, i.e. wild metapod with only tackle and magikarp before he learns tackle, then they both have 40pp so they both will start using struggle at the same time. Magikarp’s speed is 80 vs Metapod’s 30 and if you assume they are both the same level, say 9 because otherwise who wouldn’t have evolved metapod, Magikarp is going to go first. Metapod is going to have its defense fully raised so Magikarp’s attacks are going to be doing basically nothing. Therefore Metapod will win, eventually.
The result of this battle depends on a few different factors. The levels definitely matter. Whether they are wild or in a trainer battle matters. If the Metapod was caught as a Metapod or a Caterpie matters.
For one thing, everyone has been saying that the Metapod will know Tackle. Not necessarily. Tackle is not in Metapod’s level-up moveset. If you catch a wild Metapod, it will ONLY know Harden and can only know Harden until it evolves into a Butterfree.
Magikarp of course is probably assumed to be limited to Splash in this situation. However, if a Trainer owns it, the Magikarp can learn Bounce from a Move Tutor, making this battle end very quickly. Even without the Tutor, Tackle and Flail are possibilities. Therefore, taking these two Pokémon to be at the same level and just randomly fighting in the wild (or freshly caught by Trainers and then fought immediately) then Magikarp will win based on more attacking moves AND more PP. However, if the Metapod was to be at a higher level, then that could change the whole game.
Depends on what level they are and if metapod evolved from caterpie… Both might know tackle, or it could go on until one of them runs out of pp and has to use struggle
Magikarp can learn tackle and flail. Metapod, if the trainer evolved it from a Caterpie, will know tackle. The battle will end with Magikarp as the winner most likely.
-Anti-Joke Chicken
Theoretically, assuming they are both similar levels and in the wild, Metapod would win, assuming this was under level 14. If this situation was 15+, Magikarp should win.
If they were trained, and Metapod had been evolved from Caterpie, Metapod would win, assuming it was prior to level 30.
After level 30, aside from asking why the hell they haven’t evolved yet, Magikarp is a clear winner.
The only battle that would actually last forever is Wobbuffett vs Wobbuffett in Generation III, with both holding Leftovers. They wouldn’t be able to escape, and would heal quickly from the damage taken using the Leftovers. http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Wobbuffet_(Pok%C3%A9mon) (in the Trivia section)
The only neverending battle would be Ditto vs. Ditto….
Transform copies the opponent’s moves, with 5 PP.
Since Ditto only knows transform, he transforms in a ditto, with 5 out of 10 PP.
Therefor, never running out of PP and the only move it can use does no damage. It’s a neverending cycle
hmm, I’d go for metapod. Magikarp would eventually end up using struggle, damaging both itself and metapod, but metapod has harden to raise its defense meaning over time, metapod would lose minimal HP, while Magikarp would lose a bit more HP. So after a while Magikarp would take itself out coz harden would make the damaging against Metapod minimal while Magikarp has nothing to minimalize the damage. Unless we take items into account, such as Protein, Zinc etc.
But as ‘meh’ said, it would by no means be an eternal battle, just a very long one. No doubt what the OP meant. But let’s be honest, analyzing battle statistics can be quite entertaining for some of us.
(I used to have a betting ring based on it, back in highschool, and by some amazing luck, we were never busted. I never took bets or made money tho, I just loved the analysis of it.
most wild Magikarp know both Tackle and Splash, whereas most wild Metapod only know harden, in that case Magikarp would be able to do some damage.
However if the metapod was evolved from caterpie it also knows tackle so…
No because magikarp and metapod can both learn attacking moves…
FALSE
Metapod will run out of PP first and use struggle, killing Magikarp.
(Imagine Dwight’s photo is here)
Plus, by the time Magikarp can even use Struggle, Metapod’s defense is off the charts anyway.

metapod owner: ‘FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU’

Magikarp would lose health quicker in the inevitable struggle war, because Metapod would’ve used harden so many times.
yea but you always lose 1/4 health when you use struggle and it IGNORES DEFENCE
FALSE
this rule didn’t apply til the 5th generation and you can’t normally get metapod in this generation so this battle would only take place before gen 5
metapod also has harden. stringshot 35pp, harden 40pp. magikarp has splash with 40pp. therefore, 75pp metapod>40pp magikarp. would someone like to correct that if i missed something out/got something wrong?
bounce, I forgot bounce. extra 5pp, damaging move AND super effective. but this is assuming they’ve reached a level where they have learnt all their available level up moves. also, we haven’t taken into consideration what level the metapod evolved from caterpie, if it evolved at all. adding this factor, it could also have bug bite, extra 20pp and 65 base power.

Isn’t the point of this argument that the pokemon with more PP will lose as the other will be able to struggle before it and have a head start on inflicting dammage?
It depends on the gen, since struggle makes the user lose 25% of its hp as recoil after gen IV
As this most probably applies to Fire Red/Leaf Green (argue about this as much as you want, but it’s most probably true), the levels are most probably lv 5 for Magikarp (Old Rod) and 4 or maybe 5 for Metapod (found in Viridian Forest). Reminds me of an Australian metal band Kakuna vs Metapod. Such a badass name:D
Metapod will win, since it evolves from a Caterpie, it will know Tackle.
@ Level 15 Magikarp also learns tackle
At level 15, the Metapod would have evolved, and would win this fight by a landslide.
why does kakuna get no love
or Magikarp will use Flail or Bounce…
Bouce is only from the dream world or move tutor (in gen 4). Flail is learned at level 30 as of gen 2.
Your comment is irrelevant.
All level 1 pokemon are capable of “flailing” in gen 1.
Um…no?
Flail is a gen. 2 attack!
And not every pokemon is learning it!
and there are no level 1 pokemon before gen IV..
Flail is a Gen 1 attack. Pokemon can use it in Pokemon Stadium.
No. No it isn’t.
Maybe I got my wording wrong. It’s been a while since i used a pokemon to the point where it ran out of PP for all moves. I thought that at this point it started “flailing about” but it might have been “struggling” or something like that.
are you confusing flail with struggle?
I think so yeah.
Magikarp knows flail and tackle at LV100. Metapod gets KO’d when Magikarp’s hp hits 1. end of story…
That’s assuming Metapod will do any damage to it.
and you’re forgetting HARDEN…..
It won’t matter… Pray metapods next attack misses; and if it does use an oran berry. Better yet, have both hold leftovers.
Doesn’t matter, Magikarp still can learn Bounce.

There’s a lot going into this.
Depends on what level they are and if metapod evolved from caterpie… Both might know tackle, or it could go on until one of them runs out of pp and has to use struggle
Magickarp will win because it learned hyperbeam. No go f**k yourself!
Metapod can also know Bugbite
Or it could just end with Magikarp evolving into Hydreigon…then it’d pwn Metapod.
Fix that, Gyarados. *sigh*
GTFO!
Magikarp can learn tackle and flail. Metapod, if the trainer evolved it from a Caterpie, will know tackle. The battle will end with Magikarp as the winner most likely.

I would like to see an abra or a ditto pop in that fight… just to make things last longer…
abra could teleport,
abra vs Wynaut (it has shadow tag)
Sadistic much?

Nope…The opposing ( second to go; slowest) Ditto’s transform would consistently fail until it ran out off PP. Then it would use Struggle.
GEN 1
GEN 5
Only works in gen 1. In gen 2 onward, transform will fail altogether if another pokémon has already used it in the battle.
*exhales* Gen 1 ditto vs ditto still counts. BTW a blind pony is a lame horse.
This only works in gen I, they fixed it after that.
hey guys, guess what???
Its a joke!!!!
Didnt anyone think that maybe is not refering to pokemon games fight…i mean, it just makes fun of the fact that they’re both unharmful pokemons…
unless that’s the chuck norris of Magikarp!
‘Both my metapod and magikarp both now tackle. Hope is not lost.
metapod uses takle, magikarp fainted
Omg. This just happened to me and I was thinking about making a meme! mind reader.. and great. I have no credit -_-
Magikarp knows flail and tackle @ LV100. Metapod gets KO’d when Magikarp’s hp hits 1. end of story.
*Sigh* I’m pretty sure the OP meant a Harden VS Splash battle which would last a very long time, you freaking EV maniacs.

And to pre-empt the next comment.
This person would probably say:
VVV
TL ; DR
It would still be a better battle than Metapod vs. Metapod (Season 1)
apparently, somone has never heard of struggle…
aha at first i thought it said ‘The Anal Battle’
This.
A million times this.
The battle between 2 Wobbuffets with leftovers held will go on forever due to their struggle hitting lower than leftovers heals.
Everyone is forgetting Tackle, Bounce, Flail and Bug Bite.
Can’t really tell if Final or Anal Battle…
REAL MEN GO IN WITH A TEAM OF 3 LVL 100 MAGIKARP THAT KNOW ONLY SPLASH AND 3 LVL 100 METAPOD THAT KNOW ONLY HARDEN!
Am I the only one who thinks it looks like the “Anal” battle?
most wild Magikarp know both Tackle and Splash, whereas most wild Metapod only know harden, in that case Magikarp would be able to do some damage.
However if the metapod was evolved from caterpie it also knows tackle so…
Magicarp and Kakuna vs Metapod and Ditto.
FIGHT!
i defeated brock with a metapod once
it will end eventually because when you’re out of PP for every move, the moves will turn into struggle
