    thirst!

  2. Fatefinger says:

To be fair this was back in the day when it was a sales juggernaut and we all made our parent buy all that stuff. Mostly the cards. Still is a cash cow franchise but it isn’t as new. Besides “catch em’ all” hasn’t been used in years. I mean after hoenn it got kind of ridiculous.

I would say that this was more along the lines of character development. Instead of catching them all he only caught a few and focused on training them. And contrary to popular belief Ash is probably one of the best trainers in the anime world. Only when compared to other major characters is his abilites look lackluster. Just think of all the top 8 or 4 he has been in. Compare it to the probably several hundred if not thousands others who never even got past the primaries. And then they had to pull tobias and that frikkin drakrai to PAINFULLY ENFORCE Ash will NEVER, EVER win a league. Which begs to wonder if they had to pull that out of there *ss what will he face down in Unova’s league?

How many people here have managed to fill the dex every time? I have. I know there are more.

    • Captain Extracrispy says:

      I filled the pokedex…in red version…

    • Pokemon says:

My guess is, that ash will win the unova league.. Ash is currently acting like a noob but he’s doing everything right what he had done wrong in the past regions to win the league. Other than that, Pokemon is currently more focused on the even younger kids and since ash isn’t known to really lose in Unova it would be mad to make him lose in the league.

      • Fatefinger says:

Not gonna happen. Considering how the fans reacted with tobias I doubt they will pull a god mode sue from nowhere to enforce Ash will NEVER win a league. Using a cheap non-developed character using legendaries to curbstomp him didn’t go well with fans. And it shows the creators wanted Ash to lose but couldn’t figure out any other way to do it. Normally we are introduced to some other character who is an exception battler, we get some fleshing out of character and Ash loses to him by a slim margin and this person becomes champ. This time around… It shows they made ash too good. But he WILL lose the Unova league. Either in the top 8 or semi’s. Status quo is god. The chicago Cubs have a better chance of winning a world series than ash winning a league.

Ash will NEVER win a main series league. EVER. Other tournaments and the orange league do not count.

What I would like to see though is Iris and Cilan going back to kanto or another old region with Ash. Maybe another battle frontier arc or some other kind of tournament. But then again when have the people in charge of the anime ever listen to the fans? They never do and never will. PERIOD. End of story.

  5. vanille says:

i thought he will get all those pokemon in the first opening theme.. oh well

  6. Mere says:

I personally prefer Ash’s method. He catches only what he wants to train, and as a result those he trains are strong.

Case in point: Gary went on a pokemon catching spree, yet he lost in the Indigo League before Ash, we never saw him win ONCE on screen until his Eevee beat Ash’s Pikachu, and the one time they battled that it actually mattered — at the Silver Conference — he lost.

I don’t know, man, whenever I play the games I only catch the Pokemon I want on my final team and that’s it. It’s worked out well for me so far.

    • Aardvark says:

Okay, let’s go with that, caught Bulbasaur, had him for over 10 gyms, never evolved. Average player has a Venusaur before Erika. Squirtle, had him for over 10 gyms, never evolved. Average player has a Blastoise by Sabrina/Koga. Chikorita, had for 7 gyms, evolved only to bayleaf. Average player had Meganium by the fifth gym. Cyndaquil, had for 7 gyms, evolved only to Quilava(and in Diamond/Pearl no less). Average player had a Typhlosion by the fifth gum. Totodile, had for 6-7 gyms(not sure), never evolved. Average player had a Feraligatr by Morty.

So yeah he still fails, but both as a trainer and a catcher.

      • Ross says:

Maybe he just kept pressing B?

      • Fatefinger says:

The anime doesn’t work the same as in the games. Levels are not as refined and pokemon can evolve early or late or sometimes not wish to. And the issue was resolved in sinnoh and even during the tail end of hoenn/battle fronteir. I mean with the exception of buizel pretty much all his pokemon in sinnoh were at their final form. Turtwig, chimchar, starly and gligar all got to their final forms. Aipom evolved shortly after it was traded. Gible was caught too late in the series to really count. Hell even his cyndaquil evolved.

If you speak of evolution in terms of how many pokemon ash has had that evolved really only a handful of his kanto and johto pokemon never evolved or in some cases cannot like his snorlax, noctowl, heracross.

Also he has always made it to at least the top 8 save kanto. That is quite an acheivement when you consider how many people not even got past the primaries or that a couple hundred people were in each league. I mean in sinnoh we had that tobias f-ck come out of nowhere with darkrai and latios. Beat them both. In the finals that other guy didn’t even beat darkrai so you could imply if is wasn’t for the poorly developed man he would of won the whole thing.

      • Alex says:

That’s because the average trainer lets their pokemon evolve right away. All of ash’s pokemon are way past the level they would have evolved in the game, evident by the moves they know (Bulbasaur’s Solarbeam, Cyndaquil’s flamethrower)

    • CruelAngel says:

The problem is, even if that’s Ash’s method, that’s not what he always says his dream is.

      • APNZMan says:

yea and at least he’ll have something to do when he does become a pokemon master.

      • Fatefinger says:

Chalk it up to character development. At the end of the kanto arc before the league started when gary and ash were together at Oak’s lab and Gary showed all the pokemon he has caught to Ash he took a distaste to Gary’s method and subsiqently that jerk*ss Paul’s method of just catching as many pokemon as they could and only using the strong ones they caught.

In Unova that seems too of changed slightly. Now Ash is more enthusiastic in this new region and has caught what, 8 pokemon so far with maybe 2-3 more down the road and has just beaten the 5th gym. At the 8th gym the most he has ever caught is a region is 6.

  7. azalee says:

Did he ever say he WAS out to catch them all? Catching them all ≠ beating Leagues ≠ being a Champion ≠ being a Pokémon Master.

  8. Zer0_Boy says:

    What are Poke’mon?
Seriously, how hard can it be to type an é?!

    • VULPIXFAN says:

How the hell do you put the accent on the e?

    • attacksyouinsmallgrass says:

      butthurt?

    • APNZMan says:

I can never remember that Alt+ stuff

      • TheBlindFreak says:

Just remember 0233 for the é or just go to asciitable.com every time you need something.

        • Pokémastah says:

don’t you have é on your keyboard? It’s at the @ button

          • Sandnite says:

American keyboards lack that key as English lacks accented letters in the language, so there’s no need for keyboard makers to include them for American buyers. Which leaves them having to memorize Alt+numpad combinations for those letters.

            • Zer0_Boy says:

Well that’s just stupid. Just because English doesn’t have accented letters they didn’t include them? A lot of languages don’t have an ñ, neither does mine, but my keyboard still enables me to type one. My keyboard is awesome :D . You should all buy one of mine, I think it’s a Dutch keyboard.

              • Rockbear says:

It’s probably a French one, Standard QWERTY keyboards (with other words, American keyboards) are most commonly used in The Netherlands, while you have Dutch QWERTY keyboards, they’re very rare.

Besides, it’s not like it’s difficult to look up an ascii table and get the symbol on screen that way, or just copy paste the symbol.

  9. Nyancat says:

notice also that every gen he catches all the starters, but evolve only one of them (quilava doesn’t count because it’s 2-3 gens late) ಠ_ಠ

    • Leoking says:

In Hoenn he only catches Treecko, but I get your point.

    • VIENNA SAUSAGE says:

He only catches all of the starters in gen I, II, and V, and so far gen V has no starter evolutions. In Sinnoh, his Chimchar grew to an Infernape, and his Turtwig grew to Torterra.

  10. jerC says:

    Gotta’ avoid em all

  11. Never Gunna Give... says:

You know in Japan the story isn’t about catching them all…

    • Lenny says:

      Pokemon Getto Daze!

    • Fran says:

America likes to change plots to make them generic crap, just look at what they did to Yu-Gi-Oh!…where did all that “Save the world” crap come from?

      • yubtseb says:

All I know is that America “fixes” the opening songs. While I don’t dislike the japanese ones, the American ones are far more memorable.

as for the “Save the World”, somewhere along the way people began to look at anime and say “Hey this is a cartoon, so lets make it something kids will like”… and thus Fox Kids started all american dub anime down that happy go lucky filled path of rice cakes (Jelly Donuts).

        • Fatefinger says:

The english songs are terrible compared to the japanese openings. I mean the last few going back were terrible. Up to the battle frontier they were ok. The sinnoh ones were terrible. For example the last sinnog opening, in Japan it is called ‘greatest everyday’. Probably the most awesome pokemon opening for the anime ever. And they went and ruined it. Would of been better to just keep the japanese opening.

  12. Christopher says:

    You spelled “had” wrong.

    Last frame.

    Mad bro? trollface.jpg

  13. Red says:

Someone please get Ash a DS, he needs to learn how Pokemon works.

  14. Captian Extracrispy says:

Technically, the Pokedex in the show has the pokemon’s data already on it, even if you’re only seeing the pokemon and don’t catch it. Ash has at least seen almsot all the pokemon, even if his goal is to catch them.

  15. fidoruh says:

I could have sworn he had a hundred tauros

  16. taburde says:

I’m doing better than Ash simply off of Hoenn…

  17. BeRz says:

Ash doesn’t want to catch them all.

At the start of the episode in witch he got charmander, he was disapointed there were only spearow nearby.

When Misty complained, he said that it wasn’t because they were lost, he should stop catching the pokémon he wants.

Clearly, he didn’t want to catch a spearow at the time. (With the events of the first episode fresh in his mind, i guess.)

  18. vanille says:

he is only 10 and will be pro on 16. lol

  19. Niko says:

    *Pokémon, you dummy.

  20. FloptinaAguilegend says:

Maybe he’s just trying the nuzlocke way.

  21. Blaze the Sage says:

    1) Catching large numbers of Pokemon would necessitate a change in the way Ash’s relationship with his Pokemon is portrayed in the show, as there’s no way they’d have time to characterize that many of Ash’s Pokemon in one season the way they do now. In fact, take notice that once Ash starts leaving his Pokemon behind to go to new regions, he never again catches enough Pokemon to force himself to bench someone.

    2) They stopped using the “Catch ‘em all” slogan pretty quick, actually, at least in the anime. Probably partly because doing so in the anime’s world is virtually (if not literally) impossible due to the way legendaries are portrayed; truly legendary beasts of unmatched power, Pokemon who truly EARN their status as legends, instead of simply being another pokemon with a slightly higher stat total. Just look at Mewtwo in his movie(s). Go ahead – toss a Master Ball at him. I DARE you.

    3) As for the evolution thing that’s been mentioned, Evolution presents a whole new dynamic in the world of the anime, as things like speed, reflexes, body shape, size, mass, and things like that are all factored in, too. This is best shown in Sinnoh with Ash’s Turtwig. It was small, quick, and nimble, but once it evolved into Grotle, it couldn’t do that sort of stuff anymore. It became too big and bulky, and had to learn and adapt to a whole new battling style. Many Pokemon make the conscious choice not to evolve, such as the Rat; Bulbasaur and Dawn’s Piplup were also shown making this conscious decision. It’s hard to say what factors outside of experience might affect evolution.

    • meh says:

You are correct, but in the Gen V anime, Ash has caught 8 Pokémon, and with Pikachu that is 9. He often switches Pokémon to spend time with all of them. But i admit that some of his Pokémon have no explored character depth to them, and can be almost forgettable.

  22. Sir asdfghjkl says:

It doesn’t matter if you fill up your entire PC with tauros. it’ll always count as one in your pokedex

  23. harroc says:

To be fair, Ash is seemingly immortal, so he has plenty of time to fulfill that promise.

  24. Griffin says:

At least he sees all the pokemon in the wild and recorded them on his pokedex.
